What can smallholders look forward to in 2026 through Smart4Food

In 2026, small family farmers across Europe will see real, practical benefits from Smart4Food, a European initiative designed specifically for small and family farms.
Smart4Food responds to the everyday challenges farmers face by offering short, flexible learning adapted to rural life and seasonal work.

At the core of the project is the Smart4Food Hub, a digital platform providing microlearning units that can be completed in just 5–8 minutes, using a phone, tablet, or computer.
Instead of long courses, farmers gain concrete skills they can apply immediately on their own farms.
The Smart4Food Curriculum is structured around six key areas, including digital tools for smart farming, sustainable and regenerative agriculture, smart marketing, local food systems, rural education, and agri-sector innovation.
Each learning unit focuses on one clear outcome, such as choosing the right irrigation system, promoting farm products online, or improving soil health.
Learning will be practical and action-oriented, combining short videos, infographics, mini quizzes, and simple real-life tasks.
All materials will be free, open educational resources and available in multiple European languages, ensuring long-term access beyond the project’s lifetime.

Smart4Food also promotes peer learning, allowing farmers to benefit from experiences and solutions developed across different countries.
In 2026, smallholders will be better equipped with digital, green, and entrepreneurial skills to stay competitive and resilient.
Most importantly, Smart4Food helps ensure that innovation in agriculture is accessible, practical, and designed around the real needs of small family farms.
